Minister of State Yelich kicks off Snowbird Extravaganza in Florida

On January 28, 2014, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular), cut the ribbon to officially launch the 2014 Snowbird Extravaganza, an annual convention held in Lakeland, Florida, to showcase products and services for Canadian snowbirds and other travellers.

“I am delighted to be here at the Snowbird Extravaganza, an event that highlights our ongoing cooperation,” said Minister of State Yelich. “The Canadian Snowbird Association is a key partner in helping the Government of Canada to ensure that Canadians have the information they need to make safe and smart travel decisions.

“Canadians make 4-million visits to Florida every year—one visit for every nine Canadians. Canadian snowbirds and visitors make a critical contribution to the U.S. economy; in Florida alone, Canadians account for approximately 40 percent of all foreign tourism revenue,” said Minister Yelich.

Canadians escaping to warmer climates this winter are encouraged to consult Travel.gc.ca, the Government of Canada’s one-stop online shop for international travel information. This website provides information on a variety of topics, including border wait times, local laws of other countries, travel insurance and other valuable tools.

Key travel information can also be accessed through Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, RSS feeds and email Travel Updates.

Canadians are encouraged to download the Travel Smart mobile web app by following the instructions at Travel.gc.ca/mobile.

Canadians visiting the United States are also encouraged to sign up for Connect2Canada.com, the premier network for friends of Canada in the United States.
